New Café Provides Vocational Training, Real-World Work Experience and Greater Independence for Adults with Special Needs

SPRING, TEXAS TEAM Abilities is bringing something new to the table with the opening of TEAM Café, a community café where Every Order Creates Opportunity. Located inside The Antique Gallery of Houston in Spring, the new café will provide TEAM Abilities' TEAM Members with intellectual and developmental disabilities opportunities to gain real-world vocational experience while learning skills in food preparation, customer service, stocking, cleaning, teamwork and the everyday responsibilities of the workplace.

I have always wanted a restaurant environment where we could train our TEAM Members who would like to work, learn new skills and enjoy a new level of independence, said Rachel Jelks, Founder & CEO of TEAM Abilities and owner of TEAM Café. At last, we have created the right mix of opportunity and location.

Located in the heart of The Antique Gallery of Houston, TEAM Café will offer shoppers a welcoming place to relax and recharge without ever leaving the Gallery. Visitors can start their shopping adventure with a cup of coffee and a Danish, stop midway for a convenient Lunch Box Combo, or settle in and enjoy a scrumptious dine-in lunch before heading back out to continue exploring the Gallery.

And there is plenty to explore. The Antique Gallery of Houston is one of the largest antique malls in Texas, encompassing approximately 85,000 square feet and nearly 250 independent dealers. Shoppers can spend hours browsing an ever-changing collection of antiques, vintage and estate jewelry, furniture, art, books, collectibles, home décor and one-of-a-kind findsmaking TEAM Café a natural gathering place in the heart of the shopping experience.

Whether guests stop in for coffee, grab lunch to go or sit down for a casual meal, every purchase has a purpose. TEAM Café will give TEAM Members opportunities to practice workplace skills, interact with customers, build confidence, contribute as part of a team and experience greater independence.

Seven-year-old 2027 Miss Yellow Rose State Ultimate USA Princess Encourages Children and Families to Shine Bright Through Reading While Honoring Dolly Partons Legacy of Literacy

SPRING, TEXAS Seven-year-old Spring native Emma-Jean Jelks is proving that youre never too young to make a difference in your community.

As part of her 2027 Miss Yellow Rose State Ultimate USA Princess platform, SHINE BRIGHT THROUGH READING, Emma-Jean has launched her own community Library Bench Take a Book, Leave a Book Station in Spring, Texas, inviting children and families to discover new worlds, new ideas and even more about themselves through the gift of reading.

The concept is simple: Take a book. Enjoy it. Leave a book for someone else. Keep the stories moving.

Emmas project has taken on additional meaning following the recent passing of legendary entertainer and philanthropist Dolly Parton, whose commitment to childhood literacy through Dolly Partons Imagination Library put millions of books into the hands of children. Founded in 1995, the Imagination Library was created to foster a love of reading by providing books to young children regardless of family income.

In recognition of that legacy, Emma-Jean has dedicated a special area of her Library Bench to the message: BE A DOLLY.

The idea encourages others to follow Partons example in their own waynot necessarily by reaching millions of children, but by helping create a love of reading within their own families, neighborhoods and circles of influence.

Emma has always loved books, said her mother, Rachel Jelks. In light of Dollys passing and her incredible passion for reading, we wanted to make this commitment to our local community as well. Everyone has an opportunity to shine bright through reading.

Emma-Jean is an enthusiastic reader herself and particularly enjoys books featuring Bible stories. Among her favorites are stories that help bring her faith to life, including the story of Jesus walking on water.

Through SHINE BRIGHT THROUGH READING, Emma-Jean hopes her Library Bench becomes more than a place to exchange books. She wants it to become a place where children discover that reading can open doors to imagination, knowledge, faith, confidence and a much bigger world.

All-abilities superhero Trunk-or-Treat will bring costumes, games, music and sensory-friendly Halloween fun to Conroe

CONROE, TEXAS Calling all superheroes and the businesses, organizations and community groups who want to help make Halloween extra special!

TEAM Abilities will host The Great Pumpkin Adventure, a FREE all-abilities Superhero Trunk-or-Treat, from 10 a.m. to noon at TEAM Abilities, 8448 Hwy 242, Conroe, Texas 77385.

TEAM Abilities is currently seeking vendors and community partners to participate by decorating superhero-themed trunks, providing treats, hosting activities or helping create a memorable morning for members of the special needs community.

The event is designed to offer a welcoming, sensory-friendly Halloween experience where guests can come exactly as they are. Superhero costumes are encouraged but never required because at The Great Pumpkin Adventure, everyone is a hero.

Guests can expect games, music, a costume parade, a Golden Pumpkin hunt and prizes, along with plenty of opportunities to show off their own super powers. The event will also feature a variety of superhero-inspired trunks from classic comic-book heroes and princess power to first responders, everyday heroes and TEAM superheroes.

We want our families to have a place where Halloween is simply fun, said Rachel Jelks, Founder and Executive Director of TEAM Abilities. Special guest host Emma Jelks brings her Shine Bright pageant platform to an event created especially for adults with special needs

CONROE, TEXAS TEAM Abilities and Sparkle Events will host Sparkle & Shine: A Celebration of Confidence, Worth & Belonging on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at TEAM Abilities, 8448 Hwy 242, Conroe, TX 77385.

Created especially for adults with special needs, Sparkle & Shine is designed to give every participant a moment to step into the spotlight, celebrate who they are and experience the confidence that comes from being seen, valued and included.

Confidence doesn't look the same on everyone, and it shouldn't have to, said Rachel Jelks, Founder and Executive Director of TEAM Abilities. Sparkle & Shine is about creating a place where our participants don't have to become anyone else to be celebrated. They get to walk in as themselves and know that they belong.

The event will feature an I AM Craft Station, the Shine Line: A Walk of Worth, crown and sash presentations, a photo booth, snacks and refreshments and other activities centered around confidence and self-expression.

At the heart of the celebration will be the Shine Line, where participants will have an opportunity to walk the runway, share their personal I AM statement and receive a crown and sashnot as a competition or prize, but as a reminder of their individual worth.

We want every person who walks that runway to feel what all of us deserve to feelthat they are seen, they are celebrated and they are enough, Jelks said. There is tremendous power in giving someone a moment that belongs entirely to them.

A Young Host With a Mission to Shine Bright

Serving as Special Guest Host will be Emma Jelks, 2026 Little Miss Black Greater Texas Princess, whose pageant platform focuses on encouraging others to Shine Bright.

I am hosting this event so people can learn to shine their light, Emma said.

Emma will help welcome participants and celebrate them throughout the event, bringing the message behind her pageant platform into an experience designed for the special-needs community.

Emma's message is beautifully simple, Rachel Jelks said. You don't have to be the loudest person in the room or look like anyone else to shine. Sometimes shining simply means having the confidence to say, This is who I am.

TEAM Abilities Turns the Traditional Job Fair Into a Golden Ticket Hiring Party

TEAM Abilities invites job seekers to come for the fun and stay for their future with prizes, giveaways and employment opportunities

SPRING, TEXAS Finding a new job doesn't have to feel like a job.

TEAM Abilities is putting a new spin on traditional recruiting with its Golden Ticket Hiring Party, scheduled for Thursday, August 27, from 57 p.m. at TEAM Abilities' new location at 8448 Hwy 242, Conroe, TX 77385.

The casual hiring event is designed to remove some of the pressure of a traditional job fair and give prospective employees an opportunity to meet the TEAM Abilities staff, learn about the organization and explore employment opportunities in a welcoming, upbeat environment.

We don't want this to feel like walking into an intimidating job interview, said Rachel Jelks, Executive Director & Founder for TEAM Abilities. We want people to come in, meet us, learn about the work we do and discover whether TEAM might be the right place for them. You may walk in looking for a job and discover a career that matters.

TEAM Abilities serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through community-based programs and services. Employees have the opportunity to become part of the daily lives of the individuals TEAM serveshelping them participate, engage, develop independence and enjoy meaningful experiences within their community. There are several positions open for immediate employment, such as: Group Home Direct Care Staff, Day Hab Caregiver, Appointment Runners, Care Coordinators and more. All positions require an active Driver's License. All employees are paid weekly.

The Golden Ticket Hiring Party will combine recruiting with a little celebration. Attendees will have opportunities for prizes including gas cards, grocery cards, restaurant cards and additional giveaways, along with an Extravagant Grand Prize.

Some of the qualities that make someone extraordinary at this work don't necessarily show up on a résumé, Jelks said. Kindness, patience, reliability, enthusiasm and the ability to genuinely connect with another human being matter tremendously to us. Sometimes you need to meet someone to recognize that.

The event serves as an opportunity to recognize the transition from the school year into summer while creating a welcoming space for connection, recreation, and community engagement.

Families of Students with Special Needs Face Critical Transition Decisions Beyond Graduation

As graduation approaches for students with special needs, many families are asking an emotional and urgent question: What happens next?

For parents of students aging out of the public school system, the transition into adulthood can feel overwhelming. Families often find themselves navigating unfamiliar territory while searching for meaningful summer programs, structured day programming, life-skills development, community integration opportunities, supported employment, socialization events they have enjoyed in public school and long-term support systems for their loved one.

According to Rachel Jelks, CEO & Founder of TEAM Abilities, planning ahead is one of the most important things families can do.

Parents need to begin exploring options before graduation day arrives, said Jelks. The transition from the school system into adulthood can be emotional and uncertain, but families should know there are programs and communities available to help individuals with special needs continue growing, learning, socializing, and thriving.

Nikole Crowder, Professional Special Education Parent Liaison for the Conroe Independent School District Parent Resource Center, says parents should begin preparing for the transition process early and ask detailed questions before selecting a post-graduation program.

One of the biggest adjustments for families is realizing the support system changes significantly after a student exits the public-school setting, said Crowder. Parents should look for programs that encourage independence, communication, routine, life enrichment, and community participation while also creating an environment where their child feels accepted and supported.

Crowder also encourages families to visit programs in person, observe staff interaction, ask about ratios and daily activities, and determine whether the organization aligns with the specific emotional, behavioral, social, and developmental needs of their loved one.

Summer programs and transitional services can play a vital role in helping students maintain routine, continue social engagement, and build confidence during this important season of life.

This free, family-friendly event will include an Easter egg hunt, picnic, music, and opportunities to meet and take photos with the Easter Bunny. TEAM Abilities is an HCS Provider dedicated to serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through community living homes and a highly engaged day program. The organization currently operates 20 group homes throughout Montgomery and Harris Counties, providing safe housing, daily life support, and meaningful community engagement for its members.

TWUs Center for Women Entrepreneurs Marks 10 Years of Fueling Women-Owned Businesses

Since 2015, the Center for Women Entrepreneurs (CWE) at the Jane Nelson Institute for Womens Leadership at Texas Womans University has been helping transform visions into ventures, providing funding, business advisement, and training for more than 1,900 women-owned businesses across Texas to date.

To celebrate its milestone anniversary, CWE will host an anniversary event on July 8 and will feature a vendor showcase of 40 grant recipients.

Over the last decade, CWE has awarded more than $2.37 million in grant funding to 467 women entrepreneurs across Texas, supporting efforts to launch, grow, and scale businesses in urban centers and rural communities. Among the rich diversity of ventures supported by CWE are a number of intriguing enterprisessuch as a pet gift shop, doula service, custom prosthetics designer, and even a mortuary that collectively showcase the innovation and creativity of women-owned businesses across Texas.

In addition to funding, CWE has conducted more than 300 training sessions to equip women business owners with the skills, strategies, and resources needed to sustain a successful enterprise. The Center has also received a number of accolades and awards, including the Educate Award (2022) from the Denton Chamber of Commerce, as well as University of the Year (2025), Corporate Supporter of the Year (2024) and BIPOC Corporate Champion awards (2024) from the DEC Network.

Overview of CWE Programs

AccelerateHER
This immersive program fast-tracks early-stage, women-owned startups into scalable businesses. Six entrepreneurs are selected to participate in each cohort, gaining access to expert-led education and resources through CWE and its statewide partners.

To date, the rotating program has served women-owned businesses in Denton, Dallas, Houston, Abilene, Mission, Austin, and Corpus Christi.

Veteran Woman Grant
Designed to boost economic development, this grant supports innovative projects by veteran woman-owned small businesses across Texas.

Texas Rural Woman Grant
This grant empowers rural women entrepreneurs to pursue new ideas and expand business opportunities in underserved communities.

StartHER Grant
Aimed at startups, the StartHER Grant helps women-owned businesses launch innovative new initiatives and build early-stage momentum.

From Dallas to Houston, from Abilene to Longview, the stories behind CWE grant recipients across Texas are as vibrant and varied as Texas itself. A few examples of recently awarded CWE grants include: Embody Health (Keller), a womens health clinic offering holistic, compassionate care; Clean Eatz (College Station), a franchise promoting wellness through balanced meals and fitness education; ATX Supper Club (Austin), a dining adventure community creating inclusive connections through beautiful meals; and Rose Soiree (Corpus Christi), a creative floral studio specializing in events and workshops.

Grants awarded prior to 2025 have supported a host of innovative businesses across the state, such as Centro de Consejeria Familiar (Arlington), providing culturally sensitive counseling to Latino families; Copano Oyster Company (Austin), promoting sustainable coastal practices; and Game Theory TX (Fort Worth), a scratch kitchen and board game bar focused on community. Other CWE-supported businesses include boutique storefronts, youth education enterprises, a baby supply vending machine company, and a natural personal care product brand for people with chronic skin conditions.
